Daily zinc intake is therefore essential, as our bodies cannot produce it on their own. Zinc is particularly important for collagen production, which is necessary for healthy skin. By reducing the formation of melanin, the pigment responsible for age spots, zinc helps prevent their appearance. How to prevent age spots

To maintain  skin and reduce the risk of age spots, it is recommended to consume approximately 80 mg of zinc per day. Why Is There a Black Ring Inside Your Potato

by

Why Is There a Black Ring Inside Your Potato

You’re about to make a baked potato, mash potatoes for dinner, or slice one for roasting — and suddenly you notice a strange black ring or dark spot inside.

At first glance, it looks alarming. Is the potato rotten? Moldy? Unsafe to eat?

Thankfully, in most cases, the answer is much less dramatic.

Those dark rings are usually a harmless condition known as internal black spot or internal bruising, and they’re surprisingly common.

What Is the Black Ring in a Potato?

The black or darkened area inside a potato is often caused by damage or stress during storage and handling.

Unlike mold or rot, these spots are usually:

Dry, not slimy

Dark gray, black, or slightly purple

Firm rather than mushy

Hidden inside while the outside looks normal

That’s why you often don’t notice anything unusual until you cut the potato open.

Why Does It Happen?

There are several common reasons potatoes develop dark rings or spots inside.

1. Pressure Bruising

Potatoes may look tough, but they bruise more easily than most people realize.

When potatoes are:

Dropped

Stacked too tightly

Bumped during transport

Stored under heavy weight

…the inside tissue can become damaged.

This bruising doesn’t always show on the skin, but it may appear later as black spots or rings inside the potato.

This is one of the most common causes.

2. Low Oxygen During Storage

Potatoes need proper airflow during storage.

If they’re kept in conditions with poor ventilation, the center can darken because the potato tissue isn’t getting enough oxygen.

A more severe version of this is called blackheart, where the middle turns almost completely black.

The ring-shaped spots are usually a milder version of this issue.

3. Temperature Stress

Potatoes are sensitive to temperature changes.

Storing them:

In the refrigerator

In very cold environments

Near heat sources

In places with fluctuating temperatures

…can disrupt their internal chemistry.

Cold temperatures especially can convert potato starch into sugar, which may contribute to discoloration and dark spots.

4. Natural Oxidation

Sometimes the dark rings are simply caused by oxidation.

Inside every potato is vascular tissue — tiny “veins” that transport nutrients.

When exposed to air or stress, these tissues can naturally darken over time.

This process is harmless and similar to how apples brown after being cut.

Continue reading by clicking the ( NEXT 》 ) button below!

Is It Safe to Eat?

Usually, yes.

Potatoes with internal black spots are generally safe to eat if:

They smell normal

The texture is firm

There’s no slime or mold

The rest of the potato looks healthy

Most people simply cut away the darkened areas before cooking.

The affected spots may taste slightly bitter or feel drier than the rest of the potato, but they are not typically dangerous.

When Should You Throw the Potato Away?

You should avoid eating the potato if you notice:

A rotten or sour smell

Soft, mushy texture

Green coloring

Mold or fuzz

Liquid or slime

Extensive blackening throughout

These signs suggest spoilage rather than harmless bruising.

How to Prevent Black Spots in Potatoes

To keep potatoes fresher and reduce internal bruising:

Store them properly

Keep potatoes in:

A cool place

A dark location

A well-ventilated basket or paper bag

Avoid the refrigerator

Cold temperatures can damage potato texture and chemistry.

Handle gently

Avoid dropping or piling heavy items on potatoes.

Use older potatoes sooner

Final Thought

Finding a black ring inside a potato can definitely be surprising, but in most cases, it’s simply a harmless result of bruising, storage stress, or natural oxidation.

So before you throw the whole potato away, take a closer look.

Often, all you need to do is trim the dark spot and enjoy the rest as usual.

My dad caused a scene because the restaurant asked for a tip on a takeout order he picked up himself. Is it rude not to tip for carry out?. Full article

by

In a world where dining out has evolved to include a mix of dining in, delivery, and takeaway, the norms around tipping have become more complex than ever. Recently, a situation arose when my dad, accustomed to traditional dine-in tipping etiquette, was taken aback by a tip request on a takeout order he picked up himself. This led to an awkward scene at the restaurant and sparked an important question: Is it rude not to tip for carryout?

As tipping norms shift and restaurants adapt to new business models, patrons are often left in a dilemma. The expectation to tip on takeout orders can be confusing, especially when there’s a lack of clarity on what constitutes fair compensation for service in these scenarios. Understanding the nuances behind tipping for takeout can help avoid uncomfortable situations and ensure that both diners and restaurant staff feel respected.

1. Why Takeout Tipping Suddenly Feels So Confusing

The rise of the digital age and the pandemic have significantly altered the landscape of restaurant services. With a drastic increase in takeout and delivery orders, many establishments have incorporated tip lines on their receipts for these services. According to a 2022 survey by Toast, a restaurant management software company, 67% of people reported feeling unsure about how much to tip on takeout orders.

This uncertainty is compounded by the varying practices across different establishments. Some restaurants suggest a flat percentage, while others leave it to the customer’s discretion. The absence of a universal standard leaves customers like my dad confused about what is appropriate, leading to potential discomfort and even conflict.

2. What Restaurants Expect When They Add a Tip Line to Carryout

When restaurants add a tip line to carryout orders, it typically signals an expectation, albeit a subtle one, for patrons to consider the service provided. The rationale is that staff members, including kitchen workers and those managing the front, contribute to the preparation and packaging of takeout orders.

Data from the National Restaurant Association suggests that, in many cases, tips can supplement wages significantly, especially in establishments where base pay is low. By including a tip line, restaurants are, in part, attempting to offset operational costs and ensure that employees receive fair compensation for their efforts.

3. How Much Work Actually Goes Into a Takeout Order

The process of preparing a takeout order involves several steps, often requiring the coordination of multiple staff members. From taking the order and ensuring that special requests or dietary needs are met, to packaging the food neatly and efficiently, each step requires attention to detail.

For instance, a typical process might involve a host taking the order, kitchen staff preparing the meal, and a separate individual responsible for packaging and checking for accuracy. This coordination is crucial for customer satisfaction and involves more than the simple act of cooking. Recognizing the effort behind these actions can help justify the inclusion of a tip.

4. The Case for Tipping on Carryout (Even When You Pick It Up)Child Care

Tipping on carryout acknowledges the often unseen labor that goes into preparing and packaging an order. It serves as a gesture of appreciation for the time and care taken by the staff to ensure the meal meets the customer’s expectations.

Moreover, many restaurant workers rely on tips as a significant part of their income. A small contribution, even for takeout, can make a meaningful difference in their earnings, especially in states where tipped minimum wages are still prevalent.

There are valid reasons why some customers choose not to tip on takeout orders. For many, the lack of direct table service does not justify an additional fee. Unlike dining in, where servers attend to diners’ needs throughout the meal, takeout requires minimal interaction after the order is placed.

Furthermore, if a restaurant imposes service fees or charges that are meant to cover additional costs, customers may feel that these charges negate the need for a tip. Transparency in billing can help clarify whether a tip is expected or if the service fee serves that purpose.

6. When Skipping the Tip Crosses the Line Into Rude

While there are grounds for not tipping on takeout, certain situations may render the absence of a tip impolite. For example, if a custom order requires extra attention or if the restaurant staff goes out of their way to accommodate a last-minute request, a tip acknowledges their extra effort.

Additionally, during peak hours or special occasions, when staff are under significant pressure, a tip can be a positive reinforcement for their dedication and hard work.

7. How Tip Culture, Wages, and Service Fees Complicate the Issue

The tipping culture in the United States is deeply intertwined with wage structures and service fees, creating a complex web of expectations. In many states, tipped employees earn a base wage lower than the standard minimum wage, with tips intended to make up the difference.Politics

Service fees, often introduced to cover the costs of credit card transactions or increased operational expenses, add another layer of complexity. These fees may be mistaken for tips, causing confusion among patrons about whether an additional gratuity is necessary or warranted.

8. Situations Where a Takeout Tip Is Most Appreciated

Takeout tipping is particularly appreciated in situations where the staff’s workload is increased. For instance, during holidays when restaurants are bustling, or when large orders require meticulous packaging and coordination, a tip can go a long way in expressing gratitude.

Additionally, local or family-owned restaurants, which might not have the same financial cushion as larger chains, often value tips more as they directly contribute to the livelihood of their staff.

9. How to Handle Awkward Moments at the Counter Without Causing a Scene

To avoid causing a scene like my dad did, it’s helpful to prepare for these situations. A good approach is to ask the staff directly if tips are customary for takeout, which can provide clarity and prevent misunderstandings.

Another tactic is to decide in advance what your tipping policy will be for takeout orders. This can help you approach the counter with confidence, knowing that your decision is consistent with your personal values and financial situation.

10. Setting Your Own Takeout Tipping Rules You Can Stick To

Creating your own rules for takeout tipping can help navigate these situations smoothly. Consider factors such as the complexity of the order, personal financial capability, and the level of service provided.

For example, you might decide to always tip a small percentage for takeout, with additional tips for exceptional service or large, complicated orders. Having a standard approach can alleviate stress and uncertainty when the tip line appears on your receipt.

11. What to Do When Family Disagrees About Tipping Etiquette

Tipping etiquette can be a contentious issue within families, as demonstrated by my dad’s reaction. Open communication is key to resolving disagreements and finding common ground.

Discussing the reasons behind different perspectives can foster understanding. Sharing articles or guidelines from reputable sources about current tipping norms can also help align expectations. Ultimately, respecting each other’s views while finding a compromise that suits everyone can prevent future conflicts.

Does anyone know what this could be? I found two piles of it, only in my daughter’s room. We even called two pest control companies, and both said they’ve never seen anything like it... (Check first in all comments👇)

At first, everything seemed normal.

Then I noticed something strange.

Near the corner of her   tucked beside a bookshelf, was a small pile of dark, crumbly material. At first glance, it looked like dirt.

I swept it up without thinking much about it.

But a few minutes later, I found another pile.

This one was under her

That’s when I started to worry.

A Growing Mystery

The material didn’t look like ordinary dust.

It wasn’t food crumbs.

It wasn’t soil from a plant.

And the strangest part?

I couldn’t find anything similar anywhere else in the house.

Only my daughter’s room.

I snapped a picture and began searching online.

Within minutes, I found dozens of possibilities.

Some people suggested insect droppings.

Others thought it might be insulation from inside the walls.

A few even warned that it could be evidence of rodents.

None of the answers made me feel any better.

The Internet Weighs In

Curious and slightly concerned, I posted the  in an online community and asked:

“Does anyone know what this could be? I found two piles of it, only in my daughter’s  room.”

The responses poured in.

Some users were convinced it was termite frass—the tiny wood-colored pellets termites leave behind when tunneling through

Others believed it was sawdust from carpenter ants.

Several people urged me to inspect the walls immediately.

One commenter even shared a story about discovering similar piles that eventually led to a major pest infestation.

Needless to say, my anxiety skyrocketed.

The Investigation Begins

That evening, I carefully inspected every corner of the room.

I checked the baseboards.

I examined the furniture.

I looked around windows, electrical outlets, and air vents.

Nothing seemed damaged.

No holes.

No insects.

No obvious explanation.

Yet those mysterious piles remained

An Unexpected Discovery

The following day, I decided to do a deeper cleaning.

While moving a storage bin from beneath my daughter’s  bed, I noticed something unusual.

A small   box had been pushed far into the corner.

Inside were beads, glitter, dried clay, pieces of foam, and various art supplies from old school projects.

As I lifted the box, the answer finally revealed itself.

A cracked container filled with decorative material had slowly leaked over time.

Tiny particles had fallen through a gap in the bottom of the box and collected in neat piles below.

It wasn’t evidence of rodents.

It wasn’t anything dangerous at all.

It was simply leftover crafting material.

Relief—and a Lesson

When my daughter got home from school, she immediately recognized the material.

“Oh,” she laughed. “That’s from a project I made months ago. I thought I lost it.”

But the experience taught me something important.

Sometimes the scariest possibilities are not the most likely ones.

When we encounter something unfamiliar, our minds often jump straight to worst-case scenarios.

In reality, the explanation is frequently much simpler.

When You Should Be Concerned

Of course, mysterious piles or debris around your home shouldn’t always be ignored.

  • Repeated piles appearing in the same location
  • Visible insect activity
  • Chewed wood or
  • Unusual odors
  • Damage to walls or floors

it may be worth consulting a pest-control professional for an inspection.

Final Thoughts

What began as a routine cleaning session turned into a full-scale household mystery.

After hours of online research, countless theories, and plenty of unnecessary stress, the answer turned out to be hidden inside an old craft box under a bed.

The next time you find something strange in your home, remember that curiosity is helpful—but so is patience.

Sometimes the explanation is far less alarming than it first appears.

And sometimes, it’s just glitter and forgotten art supplies.
